The recent announcement that the European Commission is to launch an investigation into FIFA’s bonding scheme for agents looks like good news for agents. This may not be the case. At the moment, agents can bid up the “resale” value of a contracted player who wants to move as a means of getting his club to release his registration. As was reported last week, the Commission does not like this practice either. So if a player in this situation can simply take his registration with him (merely paying compensatory damages based on the unexpired term of the contract) agent’s profits may be reduced. Also, player salaries might just level off as they cease to be a commodity that clubs can trade.
